Ambiance
A Solo Exhibition of Works by Olivia Cauley
Something that I have found as an artist is the advantage you give yourself when you practice in more than one medium. I enjoy finding the correlations between digital and physical mediums. I typically use various types of printing techniques, such as relief, intaglio, and monotype. My work is mainly composed of landscapes or compositions that express landscape features.
As an artist I have found that most of my influences come from the experiences I’ve had and the memories that come from them. Most of my prints are representation of photos that I have taken in the past. I can take memories I have of places that I have explored and transform them into a physical medium using photography and numerous printmaking processes. This also helps me alter or present the memory in any specific way that I choose, such as a varying color, content, or perspective. This content choice not only helps me remember moments in my life, but also allows my viewers to experience some of my favorite landscapes in the specific way that I portray them. Stemmed from my continued passion for landscape content, I have progressively become a bigger and bigger advocate for the preservation of nature and all of their resources. This is something that has started to show up in some of my work, and will be practiced more in my future works.
Olivia Cauley
Olivia Cauley is twenty-two years old and lives in St.Louis, Missouri. She has a twin brother and is one of eight children. She and her family take a vacation every year where she is exposed to different areas, specifically different landscapes. These experiences bring influences of different scenes she has photographed into her work.
Olivia is currently in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program, studying Printmaking, at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She is studying under Ryan Horvath who is currently head of the printmaking department at SIUE. She has been in various art exhibitions that included solo judge Nancy Newman Rice, Paul Dresang, and Melissa Whitwam. One of which she was awarded the Print Council Award by members of the Studio Faculty Awards Committee at SIUE for her print titled, “Pink Lemonade.” Olivia is also a part of SIUE’s Print Council, a print club that is made up of various student artists on campus, as well as SIUE’s sculpture organization, SAW.
Olivia began her college career with a focus in photography and later switched to printmaking. This step in her academic career currently helps Olivia produce the work she creates. Olivia’s main focus in her work is derived from memories of experiences she has had. When she travels, she enjoys taking photographs of the places she visits. This gives her plenty of content to use in her work, taking the photos she captures and turning them into prints. The photographs are a good way to keep the memories she has of her trips present while also transforming them into a different media. Her work can vary in size, color and content, but an important thing they have in common is that they are landscapes, or forms derived from landscape features, filled with texture through the use of mark making.
