The functionality and tactility of clay were the first characteristics that drew me to the medium. It’s intimate and malleable and full of possibilities. Once fired, it’s still a material that begs to be touched and used in some practical manner. In my most recent studio practice I’ve been working to push the way we think about “functional” ceramic art as well as pushing the material itself, building bigger and more rapidly than I ever have before. In building distinctively unique ceramic furniture pieces, I want to encourage people to be more observant of the “mundane” objects they interact with everyday. These pieces aren’t camouflaged into a space, they have a personality and energy that I hope inspires a feeling of play and joy in the viewer.
