Anna Sewell was born in and raised in Boise, Idaho. She has traveled and worked around the US and other countries. She first discovered and adopted the method of ‘horsehair raku pottery’ while studying for her undergraduate degree. This continues to be a favorite practice along with other functional stoneware ceramics. Anna continues to study at BSU and is currently working towards a BFA in ceramics.

Anna Sewell graduated from The College of Idaho in Caldwell in May 2015 with degrees in Art and Psychology. In her undergraduate studies she focused in ceramics while also branching out into painting, drawing, mixed media, and more.

Anna’s artwork has been featured in the Langroise Center for the Performing and Fine Arts. Her Senior Art Exhibition was shown in The College of Idaho Rosenthal Gallery of Art in 2015. She received Merit Scholarships from the College and was published as a featured artist in the 2015 issue of The Coyote.

Ceramic art has been a passion of mine for the last ten years - I focus on functional ceramics with inspirations from my daily life, experiences and contemporary ceramic artists. I use stoneware clay and different firing processes depending on the functionality of the piece, my favorite being horse hair on raku fired pottery. The connection with nature and the process necessary to make these pieces leads to a deeply satisfying experience, each piece being carefully crafted and special time devoted to placing strands on every surface helps connect me to each and every piece I make. Creating and eventually parting with my pottery can be a visceral experience - learning to let go and let the artistic process take its course has also helped shape me as a person and as an artist. Connecting spirituality with my work is something I strive for, as well as weaving in modern and minimalist designs and ideas into everyday handmade pieces.
